New Faces, New Hopes: Evaluating Evan Engram's Addition to the Broncos
By: Carson Childs
After the first wave of free agency, where the Broncos acquired three superstar players, they have set themselves up for a successful 2025 campaign. Denver filled some huge holes, including the tight end position with superstar Evan Engram. They also addressed the only two visible weaknesses defensively, the inside linebacker slot and the strong safety position. The Broncos filled those needs by adding two former 49ers players. Both former All-Pros, they signed safety Talanoa Hufanga, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
In this article, we will discuss specifically how the signing of Evan Engram will affect the outlook on the 2025 season for the Broncos.
Denver inked Engram to a two-year, $23 million contract, with $16.5 million guaranteed. For a player of his caliber, Denver got one of the biggest steals in free agency. Turning 30 last September, Engram still has a lot left in the tank to help a contending team achieve their championship dreams. Looking at Engram's career stats, his most memorable season was in 2023, where he put up career highs in nearly every category. He put caught 114 balls for 963 yards and four touchdowns. For a tight end, that kind of production in the receiving end is unheard of.
Not only is Engram able to catch some insanely contested balls, but he also has immense speed for a tight end. Now, imagine that kind of player in a Sean Payton offense. Payton has always valued tight ends, but with the Broncos, he has never been able to utilize the talent he has been dealt. Some of the greats that Payton worked with include Jimmy Graham, Ben Watson, Jeremy Shockey, and Juwan Johnson.
Engram will only add another dimension to the dynamic Broncos offense led by second-year quarterback Bo Nix. Nix had tons of pressure to make huge plays in almost every game, as he really only had Courtland Sutton to make huge catches. Adding Engram will open up so much more for the Denver offense. Engram's receiver-like ability to stretch the field and create mismatches will force defenses to account for him, potentially freeing up other receivers like Marvin Mims and Courtland Sutton.
Moreover, in the 2024 season, it was difficult for Nix to find a reliable target in crucial situations. Adding Engram will provide Nix with a reliable target in crucial third down and red zone opportunities.
In conclusion, adding a player like Evan Engram is a game-changer for Denver. His unique skill set and experience will enhance the team's offensive capabilities, and it will be interesting to see how Sean Payton decides to use his skillset.
